Background of the Study: Dementia is a major public health concern that affects millions of elderly individuals worldwide, including in Nigeria. It is characterized by a decline in cognitive function, which can lead to memory loss, confusion, and difficulty performing daily activities (Eze et al., 2024). As the elderly population grows, the prevalence of dementia is expected to rise, making it critical to develop preventive strategies (Adeleke & Ogundele, 2023). Nurses have a pivotal role in promoting cognitive health and preventing dementia through education, early detection, and lifestyle interventions.

In Benue State, dementia is a growing issue among the elderly, and nurse-led cognitive health programs are gaining attention as a potential means to reduce the risk of dementia. These programs typically include activities such as cognitive exercises, physical activity, and nutritional guidance, all aimed at enhancing brain function and delaying the onset of dementia (Ibrahim et al., 2024). This study seeks to evaluate the effectiveness of nurse-led cognitive health programs in preventing dementia among elderly patients in Benue State healthcare facilities.

Statement of the Problem: Dementia is increasingly recognized as a significant concern for the elderly in Nigeria. However, the healthcare infrastructure in Benue State may not be adequately equipped to manage or prevent dementia. While nurses are involved in various cognitive health initiatives, there is limited research on the effectiveness of nurse-led programs in preventing dementia within the state. This study will examine the impact of nurse-led cognitive health programs in preventing dementia and improving the overall cognitive health of elderly patients.

Objectives of the Study:

  1. To evaluate the effectiveness of nurse-led cognitive health programs in preventing dementia among elderly patients in Benue State healthcare facilities.
  2. To assess the impact of these programs on the cognitive health and quality of life of elderly patients.
  3. To identify the challenges faced by nurses in implementing cognitive health programs in Benue State.

Research Questions:

  1. How effective are nurse-led cognitive health programs in preventing dementia in elderly patients in Benue State?
  2. What impact do these programs have on the cognitive health and quality of life of elderly patients?
  3. What challenges do nurses face in implementing cognitive health programs in Benue State?

Research Hypotheses:

  1. Nurse-led cognitive health programs significantly reduce the risk of dementia in elderly patients.
  2. Elderly patients who participate in nurse-led cognitive health programs demonstrate improved cognitive function and quality of life.
  3. Lack of training and insufficient resources are major barriers to the successful implementation of cognitive health programs in Benue State healthcare facilities.

Scope and Limitations of the Study: This study will focus on elderly patients in healthcare facilities in Benue State who are participating in nurse-led cognitive health programs. Limitations include potential biases in the assessment of cognitive health and challenges in generalizing findings beyond Benue State.

Definitions of Terms:

  • Cognitive Health: The ability to think, learn, and remember, which is vital for daily functioning.
  • Dementia: A general term for a decline in cognitive ability severe enough to interfere with daily life, most often affecting the elderly.
  • Nurse-Led Cognitive Health Programs: Programs initiated and run by nurses that involve activities designed to promote brain health and prevent cognitive decline, such as mental exercises, physical activity, and nutritional interventions.
